Halloween Dog Safety: The Do’s and Dont’s of Food

When you think of Halloween there is most likely a ton of stuff that comes to mind. One of the most common things being chocolate. Being a dog parent it’s sad to think you can’t indulge in some Halloween candy with your dog because they can’t have chocolate. We have good news. You can. Here are some things your dog can indulge in while you eat your chocolate.

1. Peanut Butter — A common ingredient in a lot of dog treats, Peanut Butter is delicious and a favorite. Put some in a small cup, bake in the oven, or give to them right off the spoon, and let them enjoy while you enjoy the human version of that candy — Reese’s.
2. Pup Cup — Can’t go wrong with the pup cup. A favorite among all dogs this quick treat is just sugar free whipped cream in a cup.
3. Peanut Butter and Pumpkin — If you’re anything like us you love indulging in Pumpkin spice everything this time of year. Unlike other fall festive treats your dog doesn’t have to sit this one out while you indulge. Peanut butter and pumpkin combo is a favorite among dogs. Your dog will be waiting in the kitchen for these to be done!

While there’s a lot that dogs can have for Halloween there’s also a lot more besides chocolate that they can’t have. Here is a list of things to beware of when consuming it around your dog.

1. Raisins and Grapes — Whether they are fresh or dried these two can shut down a dog’s kidneys making them very poisonous for them to consume.
2. High Sugar Food and Candy — Consuming foods high in sugar can lead to serious health problems down the road. Obesity, Diabetes, and pancreatitis are just a few health problems that could harm your dog.
3. Sugar Free Candy — This is a tricky one! Dogs can’t have foods high in sugar and they also can’t have sugar free candy. Sugar Free foods can have an artificial sweetener called xylitol. When consumed, even in very small amounts, can cause a variety of issues including low blood sugar, seizures, and liver failure.
4. Candy Wrappers — When you are done indulging in your Halloween candy make sure to fully dispose all wrappers into a trash can with a tightly secured lid.

Tips for keeping your dog safe

1. Check all ingredients prior to feeding your dog. Know the list of toxic foods and ingredients. On a holiday like Halloween it’s not the chocolate that usually gets the dog it’s the sugar free candy or another type of food with a harmful ingredient.
2. Keep all candy stored in a safe place out of reach of dogs and kids. The last thing you want to happen is to have your child grab a piece of candy and forget to put the lid back on — leaving it at a reachable distance for your dog to get into and consume.
3. After opening the candy, throw all wrappers away immediately.
